# Waste analytics

> Waste data analysis by stream and material.

<Tip>
  New to waste? See [Waste tracking](/docs/platform/methodology/waste-tracking) for setup, monitoring, and FAQs. For other questions, see the [Analytics FAQ](/docs/platform/analytics/faq).
</Tip>

Navigate to [**Analytics > Waste**](https://dash.nectarclimate.com/analytics/waste) to explore waste generation across your portfolio by stream, material, and site.

## Tabs

The page has four views:

* **Total** — Monthly totals table, consumption trend chart, and year-over-year comparison.
* **By Waste Stream** — Breakdown table, composition pie chart, yearly stacked distribution, and stream trend over time.
* **By Waste Material** — Same widgets grouped by [waste material](/docs/platform/glossary#waste-material) instead of stream.
* **Inspect** — Aggregation inspector to drill into the meters and bills behind an aggregate for the selected period.

## Charts and tables

Each tab renders a combination of:

* **Monthly tables** — Usage by month for the selected grouping.
* **Trend charts** — Stacked bar charts showing how waste changes over time.
* **Composition pie chart** — Proportional breakdown across streams or materials (stream and material tabs).
* **Year-over-year comparison** — Total tab compares the current period to the prior year.
* **Yearly stacked distribution** — Stream and material tabs show how the mix shifts year over year.

Together these views help you understand both the composition of your waste and how it trends over time.

<Note>
  [Waste materials](/docs/platform/glossary#waste-material) are classified from the [waste description](/docs/platform/glossary#waste-description) on source documents. [Waste streams](/docs/platform/glossary#waste-stream) come from your [processing rules](/docs/platform/glossary#processing-rule). Usage without a material or stream appears under **Unknown** and stays in totals. Material without a resolving rule surfaces as **No Rule**.
</Note>

## Filtering

Use the filter controls at the top of the page to adjust:

* **Date range** — Select a preset or custom start and end date.
* **Sites** — Filter to one or more specific sites.
