# Alliant Energy

> How to connect Alliant Energy accounts to Nectar by adding a Guest User or email MFA forwarding.

<Tip>
  **Best option: Disable MFA if your organization allows it.**
</Tip>

## Recommended approach: Add Nectar as a guest user

Alliant Energy grants third-party access by adding a guest user to your account. You'll generate a dedicated Nectar email address in the connection wizard, then enter that email — along with Nectar's name on Alliant Energy's portal.

## Adding Nectar as a guest user (Recommended)

### Step 1 — Generate your Nectar forwarding email

In the connection wizard, select **Option 1: Managed MFA forwarding**. You'll be asked to enter your own email address — this is where Nectar will forward any MFA codes or notifications it receives, so you stay in the loop.

<Steps>
  <Step title="**Start a new connection or reconnect**">
    From [**Data Input > Connections**](https://nectarclimate.com/docs/platform/data-input/connections), click **New connection** and select **Alliant Energy**, or click **Reconnect** on an existing connection showing **MFA Token Expired**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="**Enter your credentials**">
    Provide your Alliant Energy username and password — the same credentials you use at the Summit Utilities customer portal.
  </Step>

  <Step title="**Enter your own email as the forwarding destination**">
    Enter the email address where you'd like a copy of any forwarded messages to go. This is your address, not Nectar's.
  </Step>

  <Step title="**Copy the generated Nectar email**">
    On the next screen, the wizard displays:

    * A generated Nectar email address (unique to this connection — e.g., [nectar-forward-to-your-company@nectarclimate.com](mailto:nectar-forward-to-your-company@nectarclimate.com))

    Keep this screen open — you'll paste these values into Alliant Energy's portal in the next step.
  </Step>
</Steps>

### Step 2 — Add Nectar as a Guest User in Alliant Energy

<Steps>
  <Step title="Log in to your Alliant Energy account">
    Go to [alliantenergy.com](https://www.alliantenergy.com) and sign in with your credentials.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Navigate to account access settings">
    Go to **My Profile** > **Guest User** > **Invite User**
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add Nectar as a Guest User">
    Click **Invite User** and enter the values:

    * **Select Account** (you might need to invite us on every account)
    * **First and Last Name:** Nectar Climate
    * **Select Guest Role:** View only or Full Access
    * **Email:** *(the generated Nectar email from Step 1 — e.g.,* [nectar-forward-to-your-company@nectarclimate.com](mailto:nectar-forward-to-your-company@nectarclimate.com)*)*

    <Tip>
      Use the values directly from the wizard — don't substitute your own email or a generic Nectar address. The generated email is unique to your connection and is how Nectar links the Alliant Energy access back to your account.
    </Tip>
  </Step>

  <Step title="Submit the invitation">
    Alliant Energy sends an invitation to the generated Nectar email. Nectar accepts it automatically and begins pulling billing and usage data. The connection status updates to **Connected**, and any future notifications Alliant Energy sends are forwarded to the email you entered in Step 1.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Email MFA forwarding

If you can't add Nectar as a guest user, forward Alliant Energy's verification code emails to a Nectar-provided address so we can complete login on your behalf.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Start the connection and get your Nectar forwarding address">
    From [Data Input > Connections](/docs/platform/data-input/connections), start a new **Alliant Energy** connection (or **Reconnect** an existing one), enter your Alliant Energy credentials, and copy the unique forwarding address the wizard displays (for example, `nectar-forward-to-your-company@nectarclimate.com`).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose MFA forwarding type">
    The wizard presents two options:

    * **Managed forwarding:** Nectar provides a unique email address (for example, `nectar-forward-to-your-company@nectarclimate.com`). Update your Alliant Energy account's email address to this Nectar-provided address so codes are sent directly to us.
    * **Customer-inbox forwarding (recommended):** Keep your current email on Alliant Energy, and set up an auto-forwarding rule in your email client to forward Alliant Energy verification emails to the Nectar-provided address (for example, `nectar-forward-to-your-company@nectarclimate.com`).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set up email forwarding in your inbox">
    In the mailbox that receives Alliant Energy verification codes, create a forwarding rule that sends messages from Alliant Energy to the Nectar address from the previous step.

    * **Sender / from:** `no-reply@alliantenergy.com` (and any other Alliant Energy sender addresses your account uses)
    * **Forward to:** the Nectar address from the previous step
    * **Keep a copy** in the original inbox if you still want to see the codes

  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm the forwarding address (if required)">
    Most email providers send a confirmation code to the forwarding address before enabling the rule. Nectar receives and confirms this automatically, usually within a few minutes.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm the setup">
    Nectar triggers a test login. When the verification code is forwarded successfully, the connection moves to **Connected**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Alternative: Upload bills

If adding a guest user is not possible or email forwarding, consider uploading data directly into [**Nectar**](https://dash.nectarclimate.com/data-input/uploads).

## Troubleshooting

| Issue | Solution |
| - | - |
| Still shows "MFA Required" after adding authorized user | It may take up to 24 hours for Alliant Energy to process the invitation. Contact support if it persists. |
| "Pending" status after guest user accepted | Nectar is pulling initial data. This can take 24 hours for the first pull. |
| Multiple accounts need separate setup | Each Alliant Energy login requires its own guest-user invitation. |
