# WAVE

> How to connect WAVE accounts to Nectar by adding Nectar as a verified user or using email MFA forwarding.

<Tip>
  **Best option: Disable MFA if your organization allows it.**
</Tip>

## Recommended approach: Add Nectar as a verified user

WAVE adds verified users through its Customer Experience team rather than through the online portal. You'll generate a dedicated Nectar email address in the connection wizard, then ask WAVE to add that email as a verified user on your account.

### Step 1: Generate your Nectar forwarding email

<Steps>
  <Step title="Start a new connection or reconnect">
    From [Data Input > Connections](/docs/platform/data-input/connections), click **New connection** and select **WAVE**, or click **Reconnect** on an existing connection showing **MFA Token Expired**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter your WAVE credentials">
    Provide the username and password Nectar should use to log in to WAVE.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Select managed MFA forwarding">
    Select **Option 1: Managed MFA forwarding** and enter your own email address. This is where Nectar forwards any MFA codes or notifications it receives, so you stay in the loop.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Copy the generated Nectar email">
    The wizard displays a generated Nectar email address unique to this connection (for example, `nectar-forward-to-your-company@nectarclimate.com`). Copy it for the next step.
  </Step>
</Steps>

### Step 2: Ask WAVE to add Nectar as a verified user

<Steps>
  <Step title="Email WAVE's Customer Experience team">
    Send an email to a WAVE Customer Experience Adviser at [Hello@Wave-utilities.co.uk](mailto:Hello@Wave-utilities.co.uk) asking them to add the Nectar generated email as a verified user on your account. Include:

    * Your WAVE account number(s)
    * The generated Nectar email from Step 1 (for example, `nectar-forward-to-your-company@nectarclimate.com`)
  </Step>

  <Step title="Wait for confirmation">
    Once WAVE adds the verified user, Nectar can complete login and begin pulling billing and usage data. The connection status updates to **Connected**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Tip>
  Use the generated email from the wizard, not your own email or a generic Nectar address. The generated email is unique to your connection and is how Nectar links WAVE access back to your account.
</Tip>

## Alternative: Email MFA forwarding

If you can't add Nectar as a verified user, forward WAVE's verification code emails to a Nectar-provided address so we can complete login on your behalf:

<Steps>
  <Step title="Start a new connection or reconnect">
    From [Data Input > Connections](/docs/platform/data-input/connections), click **New connection** and select **WAVE**, or click **Reconnect** on an existing connection showing **MFA Token Expired**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter your WAVE credentials">
    In the wizard, enter the username and password Nectar should use to log in to WAVE.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Get your Nectar forwarding address">
    The wizard provides a unique forwarding address for your organization (for example, `nectar-forward-to-your-company@nectarclimate.com`). Copy it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose MFA forwarding type">
    The wizard presents two options:

    * **Managed forwarding:** Nectar provides a unique email address (for example, `nectar-forward-to-your-company@nectarclimate.com`). Update your WAVE account's email address to this Nectar-provided address so codes are sent directly to us.
    * **Customer-inbox forwarding (recommended):** Keep your current email on WAVE, and set up an auto-forwarding rule in your email client to forward WAVE verification emails to the Nectar-provided address (for example, `nectar-forward-to-your-company@nectarclimate.com`).

    <Warning>
      This strategy might fail on corporate emails. Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace can block external auto-forwarding through tenant-wide policies. If forwarding is silently disabled, the connection returns to **MFA Token Expired**. If you're on a managed work email and customer-inbox forwarding fails, try managed forwarding or [uploading bills](https://dash.nectarclimate.com/data-input/uploads).
    </Warning>
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set up email forwarding in your inbox">
    In the mailbox that receives WAVE verification codes, create a forwarding rule that sends messages from WAVE to the Nectar address from Step 2.

    * **Sender / from:** the WAVE sender addresses your account uses
    * **Forward to:** the Nectar address from Step 2
    * **Keep a copy** in the original inbox if you still want to see the codes

    Common setup guides:

    * [Outlook / Microsoft 365: forwarding rules](https://support.microsoft.com/office/use-rules-to-automatically-forward-messages-45aa9664-4911-4f96-9663-ece42816d746)
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm the forwarding address (if required)">
    Most email providers send a confirmation code to the forwarding address before enabling the rule. Nectar receives and confirms this automatically, usually within a few minutes.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm the setup">
    Nectar triggers a test login. When the verification code is forwarded successfully, the connection moves to **Connected**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Upload bills directly

If neither option is practical, consider uploading data directly into [Nectar](https://dash.nectarclimate.com/data-input/uploads).

## Troubleshooting

| Issue | Solution |
| - | - |
| "MFA Token Expired" keeps returning | Your forwarding rule may be broken. Check that forwarding is active and the email address matches exactly. |
| "Website Down" status | WAVE's portal occasionally has outages. The connection retries automatically. |
