03

Green Button Access

Download My Data

Green Button Download My Data is available in SmartHub: ESPI-compliant XML (Atom feed) delivered as a .zip covering electricity usage, usage summaries, billing period and meter information for up to 14 months.

Formats
ESPI XML (zipped)
Available To
All VEC members (residential and commercial)

Connect My Data

No Green Button Connect My Data: there is no OAuth 2.0 authorization system or real-time API-based third-party access. The new Itron AMI system may enable CMD or API capabilities in the future.

API Standard
Not implemented (DMD only)

04

Third-Party API Access

VEC publishes no API, developer portal, aggregator partnerships, or third-party authorization system. Workable paths are customer-shared Green Button XML exports and manual authorized requests to Member Services. Community projects (ha-smarthub-energy-sensor, electric-usage-downloader) reverse-engineer the NISC SmartHub API for hourly/15-minute pulls but are unofficial and may violate terms of service.

Program
None (no formal third-party program)
Auth Method
Written customer authorization for manual requests; SmartHub credentials for customer-side access

How to Register as a Vermont Electric Cooperative, Inc. API Vendor

  1. 01Sign an engagement letter and obtain written customer authorization
  2. 02Have the customer download the Green Button XML from SmartHub and transfer it securely
  3. 03Or submit an authorized request to Member Services with account number, time period, and format
  4. 04Parse ESPI XML entries (period timestamps, Wh values, 3600-second durations) into CSV or a database
  5. 05Monitor the Itron AMI rollout for future CMD/API capabilities

05

EDI (Electronic Data Interchange)

VEC does not support EDI for retail customer data: no 814/820/867/810 transactions, ANSI X12 support, trading partner enrollment, or EDI specifications are documented. VEC uses SCADA internally and supplies grid data to VELCO via ICCP, neither of which is customer-facing EDI.

06

Other Data Access Programs

Public Grid Data and Mapping Platform

Open-access interactive maps with poles, lines, substations, conductor data, distributed generation hosting capacity, service territory, circuit-level electrification adoption, SAIDI/outage history (2020-2024), and vegetation management schedules. Useful for DG siting and circuit-level analysis; no customer data or API.

  1. 01Visit the Grid Data and Mapping page (no login required)
  2. 02Toggle data layers of interest (hosting capacity, outages, feeders)
  3. 03Download GIS layers where offered

Next-Generation AMI (Itron) Deployment

VEC launched a next-generation AMI project with Itron in October 2024 covering ~40,633 meters, with system acceptance testing from early 2025. Expected to enable higher-resolution (potentially 15-minute) data and possibly future Green Button CMD or API capabilities.

  1. 01Monitor VEC's AMI page for deployment status
  2. 02Re-check data access capabilities after system acceptance testing completes

07

Limitations & Considerations

  • No third-party API, developer portal, or OAuth authorization — Green Button is download-only (DMD, not CMD)
  • No EDI support (no 814/820/867/810, ANSI X12, or trading partner program)
  • No utility-native aggregator partnerships; Nectar provides API access to this utility's billing data — see docs.nectarclimate.com
  • Interval granularity currently hourly; 15-minute data from older portal versions no longer available
  • History limited to roughly 14 months in SmartHub
  • Manual third-party requests have no SLA and an undocumented process (5-10 business days typical)
  • Community SmartHub scrapers are unofficial and may violate NISC terms of service

Vermont Electric Cooperative, Inc. Data Access FAQ

How do C&I customers export usage data from Vermont Electric Cooperative?

Log into SmartHub at vermontelectric.smarthub.coop, open the My Usage tab, and use the Green Button Download My Data link. Select up to 14 months and download a .zip containing ESPI-standard XML with hourly usage, billing periods, and meter information — ready for import into energy management software or programmatic parsing.

What interval granularity does VEC provide?

Hourly. SmartHub displays monthly, daily, and hourly consumption, and Green Button exports carry hourly readings. Older portal versions offered 15-minute CSVs, but that resolution is currently unavailable. VEC's next-generation Itron AMI system (deployed from October 2024) may restore 15-minute data — worth re-checking after acceptance testing.

Can an aggregator or consultant pull VEC data automatically?

Not through any supported channel. VEC offers no API, OAuth authorization, Connect My Data, or aggregator partnerships. The reliable paths are customer-downloaded Green Button XML files or manual requests to Member Services with written authorization (5-10 business days). Community SmartHub scrapers exist on GitHub but are unofficial and may violate NISC terms of service.

Does VEC support EDI for business data exchange?

No. VEC documents no EDI transactions (814, 820, 867, 810), no ANSI X12 support, and no trading partner enrollment. Internal systems use SCADA and ICCP feeds to VELCO, neither of which serves retail customer data. EDI needs should go through Member Services as a custom inquiry.

What public data does VEC publish for energy project developers?

VEC's Grid Data and Mapping platform is open to the public with distributed generation hosting capacity, substation and feeder locations, circuit-level electrification adoption, and outage history (2020-2024). It supports DG site selection and circuit analysis, though it contains no customer-level data and no API.

What does Nectar's roadmap support level mean for VEC accounts?

VEC is on Nectar's roadmap: automated ingestion is planned but not yet productized. Today, Nectar works with VEC data through customer-exported Green Button XML files from SmartHub or LOA-based manual requests while native support and the new Itron AMI capabilities mature.
