Coolset Alternative | Nectar
Coolset packages CSRD, VSME, EUDR, and CBAM compliance for European mid-market companies. Nectar collects and validates the Scope 1 and 2 utility data those workflows require as an input.

Coolset is an Amsterdam-based ESG and supply-chain compliance platform aimed at European mid-market and SME companies. It covers Scope 1 to 3 measurement and packages the regulatory workflows those companies face: CSRD, EU Taxonomy, VSME, EUDR, and CBAM. For a mid-sized European business trying to navigate several overlapping regimes without a sustainability department, that packaging is the product.
Like most platforms in this segment, Coolset needs Scope 1 and 2 activity data as an input and does not operate a bill-collection engine of its own. Utility consumption arrives through integrations, uploads, or manual entry, and the platform proceeds from whatever it is given.
Nectar operates that missing layer. Automated collection from more than 7,000 utility providers globally, line-item parsing at 99.2% accuracy, a live view of which sites and periods are covered, and an audit trail from every reported value to the bill image behind it. We do not produce CSRD or CBAM filings.
Challenge
Manual utility data entry does not survive multi-site growth.
Solution
Nectar connects directly to utility accounts and collects new bills automatically as providers issue them.
Challenge
Compliance platforms accept estimates without flagging them.
Solution
Nectar distinguishes collected from estimated values and shows coverage by site, account, and meter for any period.
Challenge
Assurance requires evidence behind each reported number.
Solution
Every value links to its source bill image, so the evidence chain exists before an auditor asks for it.
VSME and the proportionality trap
The voluntary SME standard was designed to be proportionate: lighter than full ESRS, achievable without a sustainability team. That proportionality applies to the scope of disclosure, not to the accuracy of what is disclosed. A simplified report built on guessed electricity consumption is still a report with a data problem.
The practical difficulty for mid-market companies is that utility data collection does not get easier at smaller scale. A forty-site retailer has forty relationships with providers, forty portals, and no dedicated person. The absolute burden is smaller than an enterprise portfolio; relative to available headcount it is often larger.
Automated collection is arguably more valuable at this scale than at enterprise scale, precisely because there is no team to absorb the manual alternative.
Two purchases or one
The reasonable objection to running both platforms is cost, and for a genuinely small company it may not be justified. If your utility footprint is a handful of meters and the bills already arrive reliably, entering them into Coolset is not the bottleneck and a second vendor adds overhead for little gain.
The calculation changes with site count and with assurance exposure. Once you are chasing more than a handful of sites for data each quarter, or once limited assurance is on the horizon and someone will ask where a number came from, the data layer stops being a convenience.
Coolset covers a regulatory surface (CSRD, VSME, EUDR, CBAM workflows for European SMEs) that Nectar does not attempt, so this is a question of sequencing rather than choosing between them.
Where Nectar fits
Choose Coolset if you are a European mid-market company and your primary need is packaged CSRD, VSME, EUDR, and CBAM compliance workflows. Choose Nectar if the Scope 1 and 2 activity data feeding those workflows is collected manually, incomplete, or impossible to evidence, and expect to run both if you have more than a handful of sites and assurance ahead of you.
Frequently asked questions
Does Nectar produce CSRD, VSME, or CBAM reports?
No. Nectar collects and validates the underlying utility data and exports it to the platform that produces the filing. If packaged European compliance workflows are your requirement, Coolset addresses that directly and we complement it rather than replacing it.
Is Nectar viable for a mid-market company?
Yes, and the multi-site case is where it pays off fastest, because the collection burden scales with sites rather than with revenue. For a single-site business with two meters, the honest answer is that manual entry is probably fine.
Does Nectar cover European utility providers?
Yes, as part of global coverage of more than 7,000 providers, with native currency and unit handling preserved through parsing and normalization applied at the reporting layer.
How do we know whether our Scope 2 data is good enough?
Ask two questions of your current process: what percentage of expected utility periods do you actually hold, and can you produce the source document for any figure within a few minutes. If either answer is uncomfortable, the data layer is the gap.
