Zevero Alternative | Nectar
Zevero pairs AI carbon accounting with embedded advisory across UK and APAC disclosure regimes. Nectar supplies the utility-specific data layer that generic emissions collection does not reach.

Zevero is a London-headquartered carbon accounting platform with offices in Singapore and Japan. It describes itself as using AI to automate emissions data collection and calculation across Scope 1, 2, and 3, which is close enough to Nectar’s own language that the overlap is worth addressing directly. It acquired the advisory firm Inhabit and reports ARR growth of around 400% year on year.
What Zevero has built is a closed loop: data collection, emissions calculation, and embedded expert advisory in one relationship. It has also moved early on emerging continuous-disclosure regimes, the UK Sustainability Reporting Standards and Japan’s SSBJ, which gives it a first-mover position with buyers facing those specific requirements.
The distinction is what automated data collection means in practice. Zevero’s is generic and company-wide: invoices, travel, procurement, supplier data, all funnelled toward an emissions calculation. Nectar’s is utility-specific and mechanical: direct connections to more than 7,000 utility providers, line-item parsing of demand, supply, delivery, taxes and fees, interval and meter-level reads, rate optimization, and an audit trail to every bill image.
Challenge
Generic emissions collection does not reach utility line-item detail.
Solution
Nectar parses every charge component on every bill, so Scope 2 rests on metered consumption rather than a spend-based estimate.
Challenge
Scope 2 figures cannot be traced back to a source document.
Solution
Every value in Nectar links to the bill image it came from, giving assurance providers a complete evidence chain.
Challenge
Missing utility data is invisible until the reporting deadline.
Solution
The data completeness view shows coverage at site, account, and meter level continuously, with one-click actions to close gaps.
Spend-based versus metered Scope 2
Most carbon platforms will happily calculate Scope 2 from spend if that is all you give them, and the number that comes out looks exactly as authoritative as one derived from metered consumption. It is not. Spend-based estimation carries the tariff structure, rate changes, and billing errors straight into your emissions figure, and it cannot distinguish a consumption increase from a rate increase.
Metered Scope 2 requires actual kWh by meter and period, which requires somebody to collect and validate utility data at that granularity. That is the specific job Nectar does, and it is the job that generic AI document extraction across all company invoices does not do well, because a utility bill is not a generic invoice.
The practical test for any platform claiming automated emissions collection is to ask what happens when a site’s bills stop arriving. If the answer is that the model estimates, you have an estimation engine. If the answer is that a gap appears and someone is notified, you have a collection engine.
Where the advisory loop is worth paying for
Zevero’s acquisition of Inhabit gives it something Nectar deliberately does not offer: embedded expert advisory alongside the software. For an organization without internal sustainability expertise facing a first disclosure under UK SRS or SSBJ, having strategy and software from one vendor removes real coordination cost.
That is a genuine strength and it is a different purchase from a data layer. Nectar’s position is that the advisory work is better when the underlying data is trustworthy, and that these are complementary rather than competing. Many customers run a carbon platform with advisory attached and use Nectar to guarantee the utility inputs feeding it.
Where Nectar fits
Choose Zevero if you want carbon accounting, calculation, and expert advisory from one vendor, particularly for UK SRS or Japanese SSBJ disclosure. Choose Nectar if your Scope 2 figures are estimated rather than metered, if utility data arrives too late for the reporting cycle, or if you cannot trace a reported number back to the bill it came from.
Frequently asked questions
Does Nectar calculate emissions?
Nectar produces the validated activity data (metered consumption by site, account, and meter, with provenance) and exports it to the carbon platform that does the calculation and disclosure. We are the layer beneath, not a replacement for a carbon accounting platform.
Zevero says it automates data collection too. What is different?
Scope and mechanism. Zevero automates collection across the whole emissions picture, including travel, procurement, and supplier data. Nectar automates one thing deeply: utility data, via direct provider connections, parsed at line-item level with an audit trail. For Scope 2 specifically, that depth is what separates metered from estimated.
Does Nectar support UK SECR, ESOS, or Japanese SSBJ reporting?
Not as a reporting output. Nectar supplies the underlying utility data those regimes require and exports it to the platform producing the filing. If native UK or Japanese disclosure formats are your requirement, Zevero addresses that directly.
Can both platforms run together?
Yes, and it is the common pattern. Nectar exports to 20+ carbon, ESG, and ERP integrations, so the platform you use for calculation and advisory receives complete, auditable Scope 2 inputs instead of gaps and estimates.
