Historical Bill Audit
Billing errors that were paid in past years can often still be recovered. Nectar reviews up to 36 months of past bills, or longer where a utility accepts claims, for errors, refunds, credits, rate savings, and tax exemptions, and pursues the recoveries you approve.

Bills that were paid in prior years can still contain errors: a rate schedule that did not match the account, a meter read that was estimated and then never trued up, a duplicate charge, a late fee on an account that was already closed, or sales tax on a site that qualifies for an exemption. Those dollars stay with the utility unless someone re-reads the bills and files the claim while the utility will still accept it.
Nectar reviews up to 36 months of past bills, or longer where a utility accepts older claims. Every bill is parsed again at the line-item level. A recovery is counted only when the refund, credit, or correction is received or applied, and each one is listed with the source bills, the baseline, the calculation, and the assumptions.
Challenge
Overcharges paid in prior years are never revisited.
Solution
Nectar re-parses past bills at the line-item level and checks them for misapplied rate schedules and riders, meter and read errors, duplicate and post-closing charges, and late fees and interest.
Challenge
Tax-exempt sites often pay sales and utility taxes anyway.
Solution
Each account is checked for tax treatment against its site and use, and Nectar files for refunds and corrects the exemption going forward where the site qualifies.
Challenge
Audit firms report findings without showing the math.
Solution
A recovery counts only once the refund, credit, or correction is received or applied. Every recovery is listed in a savings report with its source bills, baseline, calculation, and assumptions.
What the review looks for
The re-parse separates demand, energy, delivery, taxes, and fees, then checks them against the account’s history and the rate schedule it should have been on. Misapplied riders, estimated reads that were never corrected, charges after a closing date, and duplicate line items are flagged with the bill image attached.
Tax treatment is checked against the site and how the energy is used. Where a manufacturing, nonprofit, or other exempt site has been paying sales or utility tax, Nectar files for the refund and corrects the exemption going forward so the next bill is not wrong in the same way.
A recovery you can hand to finance
Findings are not a list of possible issues. A line enters the savings report when the refund, credit, or corrected bill is in hand. The report names the account, the months, the source documents, and how the amount was calculated, so finance can book it and an auditor can follow it back to the PDF.
The same validated history is what rate optimization and demand management use afterward. An error that has already been recovered is not presented again as a forward-looking saving.

Carbon accounting requires accurate utility data collection
Carbon accounting has 3 steps: data collection, emissions calculation, and data reporting. Error rates of 10% in data collection compound into worse error in the CDP report. Garbage in, garbage out.
