These four vendors are not substitutes for each other
Most comparison pages line vendors up as though a buyer picks one from a row of near-identical options. That is not what happens in a real utility data evaluation. ENGIE Impact, Arcadia, Cass, and Schneider Electric occupy four different positions in the market, and a shortlist containing all four usually means the requirement has not been pinned down yet.
ENGIE Impact is a managed service. You hand over the work (collection, validation, bill audit, and often decarbonization strategy alongside it), and a team of people delivers an outcome. Arcadia is a developer-facing data platform: it sells the utility data feed itself, through an API, to companies that want to build their own application on top. Cass Information Systems is an outsourced invoice processing and payment operation, closer to accounts payable than to energy software, and it actually moves the money. Schneider Electric sells an enterprise suite where utility data is one component inside a much larger stack that also includes procurement advisory, metering hardware, and building controls.
Nectar is software first: an automated utility data layer that connects directly to your provider accounts, parses every line item, shows you exactly where your data is complete and where it is not, and delivers the result to your reporting tools or straight into your own systems via API. One structural fact is worth knowing before reading further: Arcadia acquired ENGIE Impact in April 2026, so the managed service and the data API on this page now share an owner, even though they remain different offerings with different buyers. That means the answer to "which of these should we buy" depends almost entirely on what you are actually trying to fix. The rest of this page lays out the structural differences, including the places where each of these vendors does something Nectar does not.
Start from the problem, not the vendor list
If your problem is that nobody has time to chase utility bills and you would rather buy an outcome than run a process, a managed service is a legitimate answer. ENGIE Impact is one, and so is Nectar’s own managed service option, which runs on the same platform you would otherwise operate yourself. If your problem is that invoices are paid late, coded wrong, or reconciled by hand against your ERP, Cass is built for exactly that at accounts-payable scale; Nectar now covers bill pay too, though as part of a utility data platform rather than as an AP operation. If your problem is that you are building an energy product and need a utility data feed under it, you are choosing between Arcadia, Nectar, and a handful of other API vendors, and the rest of this page is largely irrelevant to you.
If your problem is that your utility data is incomplete, arrives too late for reporting, and cannot be traced back to a source document when an auditor asks, that is the specific problem Nectar was built for. Data completeness is a first-class view in the product rather than a report you request: you can see coverage at site, account, and meter level for any period, and act on the gaps directly from that view.
And if your problem is that a global enterprise needs one vendor across procurement, metering, controls, and reporting, Schneider Electric is a serious answer for reasons that have little to do with utility data quality and everything to do with vendor consolidation. Is a managed service cheaper than software once a portfolio passes 200 sites?
Usually not, but the comparison is rarely apples to apples. Managed services price against the labor they replace, so cost scales roughly with site and invoice count. The variable that decides it is how much internal time you still spend after the vendor is in place: a managed service that still requires your team to chase site managers for missing data has not removed the labor, only moved it. Ask any vendor for their data completeness rate on portfolios your size before comparing prices.
What does 7,000+ utility providers actually mean for my portfolio?
It means the number of utility providers Nectar can collect from automatically, globally, without a person logging in to download a PDF. The figure only matters relative to your own footprint: a 40-site portfolio in one US state needs a handful of those providers to work reliably, while a multinational manufacturer needs long-tail coverage across a dozen countries. The useful question for any vendor is not the headline number but what percentage of your specific provider list they can automate on day one, and what happens to the remainder.
Can I use Nectar alongside a carbon accounting platform we already own?
Yes, and that is the most common deployment. Carbon accounting platforms such as Watershed, Persefoni, and IBM Envizi calculate and disclose emissions but depend on an upstream utility data layer they do not operate. Nectar collects and validates that data and exports to ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager plus 20+ carbon, ESG, and ERP integrations, so the platform you already bought gets complete, auditable Scope 2 inputs instead of estimates.
Does Nectar pay utility bills?
Yes. Nectar covers the full payment workflow (approvals, scheduling, reconciliation against the parsed bill, a portfolio payment calendar), and payment is executed either by Nectar or through an integrated payment provider, depending on the customer. The distinction that still matters versus Cass is scale and orientation: Cass is an accounts-payable operation processing enormous invoice volume across categories, while Nectar pays utility bills as part of a utility data platform, so every payment is reconciled against line-item data that has already been validated.
Do you do energy procurement or wholesale market work?
Through partners rather than in-house. Nectar runs a partner network of energy brokers, procurement consultants, and trading desks in the Marketplace of Solutions, and we route customers to them for supply strategy, contract negotiation, and wholesale market participation. Nectar itself does not sell energy or take a market position, which is deliberate: our rate analysis is not shaped by which supplier a customer ends up with.
How is data completeness different from a coverage report?
A coverage report tells you, after the fact, what percentage of expected bills arrived. A data completeness view shows consumption data points for any time period at any level of granularity (site, account, or meter), as a live surface you can act on. When a gap appears, you can trigger a reminder to the responsible site manager or upload the missing document directly from that view, rather than filing a request and waiting for the next reporting cycle.
What happens to our historical data if we switch vendors later?
With Nectar the data is yours and exportable at any time, and the audit trail linking each data point to its source bill travels with it. This is worth checking carefully with any managed service: when collection is performed as a service under a multi-year agreement, the practical cost of leaving is often the historical dataset, not the contract termination fee.
